Australians are bombarded by the American culture at every turn. Long before Kim Kardassian, famous beauty icons include Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Farrah Force-it. I’m using the term ‘culture’ loosely here – some would say American culture is the equivalent of a Yoplait fat free yogurt – having all the taste and goodness removed and replaced with sugar. In the 1970’s, favourites of mine that personified the American ideal were Marie and Donnie Osmond. Members of the Mormom Church, they abstained from sex, alcohol, tobacco and coffee, giving them a wholesome appeal. Not to mention great teeth and hair.
